Japan raises concern with France over inviting China for next G7 summit

(MENAFN) Japan has expressed concern to France regarding the potential invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping to next year’s Group of Seven (G7) summit in Evian, according to general reports.

Tokyo urged Paris to carefully consider any outreach to Beijing, warning that China’s participation could complicate discussions among G7 members. Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi emphasized on Friday that Tokyo “places importance on the unity of the G7, which shares fundamental values such as democracy and the rule of law.”

France will assume the rotating G7 presidency in January and is scheduled to host the summit in June 2026 at the Alpine resort town of Evian-les-Bains. As host, France has the authority to invite additional countries to the expanded summit. The G7 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US, with the European Union participating as a non-enumerated member. Russia was suspended from the group in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea.

Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron met with Xi in Beijing and stated that France was “even more determined” to work with China and partner countries as it prepares to take over the G7 presidency. “Together we can change things,” he said in a statement on the US social media platform X.

Tensions between Tokyo and Beijing have escalated recently. On November 7, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could legally constitute a “survival-threatening situation,” potentially allowing Japan to “exercise the right of collective self-defense.” China reacted sharply, warning its citizens against travel to Japan, suspending seafood imports, and postponing a trilateral culture ministers’ meeting with Japan and South Korea. Taiwan, claimed by Beijing, lies near Japan’s Yonaguni Island, adding to regional sensitivities.
