Majority of French hold negative outlook for 2026
Roughly six in ten respondents in France expressed a negative outlook for the coming year, placing the country at the bottom of the global ranking when it comes to optimism about 2026.
Fewer than half said they expect conditions to improve, a figure far below the overall international average recorded in the survey, which covered dozens of countries.
The pessimism extends to views about the current year as well. An overwhelming majority of French participants described 2025 as a bad year for the country, a level of dissatisfaction that stands well above the global norm and puts France among the most negative nations surveyed. This contrasted sharply with responses from parts of Southeast Asia, where most respondents said the past year had been positive for their countries.
Interestingly, this bleak national mood does not fully reflect how people feel about their own lives. More than half of those surveyed in France said 2025 had been a good year for them personally, slightly higher than the worldwide average. This highlights a widening divide between personal well-being and perceptions of the country’s overall direction.
Official data have previously pointed to a similar pattern, noting that many households remain confident about their individual situations while growing increasingly doubtful about the nation’s future. Analysts say this disconnect has been building for several years and became more pronounced even before the COVID-19 crisis.
Looking forward, financial anxiety remains a key concern. Only a small minority of French respondents expect their disposable income to increase in 2026, the weakest expectation among all countries included in the poll.
Concerns over safety are also elevated. A significant share of respondents believe France is likely to face a major terrorist attack, a level of fear notably higher than the global average, underscoring persistent worries about security alongside economic uncertainty.
