French Doctors launch strike over 2026 social security funding
Franck Devulder, president of the French Confederation of Medical Trade Unions (CSMF), acknowledged the impact of the strike, saying: "We know very well that when we go on strike, we put hospitals under strain” and “we place the population in a more uncomfortable situation, as with any strike action." He noted that participation is running at “just over 85%.”
Doctors have raised concerns about the budget shortfall amid growing healthcare needs, increased oversight of sick-leave prescriptions, and government measures that could allow authorities to reduce fees for certain medical acts without engaging in social dialogue, according to reports.
Meanwhile, staff at the Louvre Museum have resumed strike action over working conditions. Around 350 employees from operations, conservation, and support services attended a general assembly called by an inter-union grouping led by CFDT, CGT, and Sud. Management confirmed that the museum would remain “partially open,” with visitors restricted to the “masterpieces route,” including the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, and Winged Victory of Samothrace.
The Louvre strike, initially launched on December 15 and briefly suspended four days later, resumed as unions said negotiations with the Culture Ministry had failed to yield “sufficient progress.”
