France summons Iranian envoy over crackdown on peaceful protesters

(MENAFN) French authorities have formally called in Iran’s ambassador to voice strong condemnation of what they described as the violent suppression of protesters, according to reports released Tuesday.

France’s foreign minister informed members of parliament that he summoned Ambassador Mohammad Amin-Nejad to protest what he characterized as acts of “state violence,” accusing Iranian authorities of using force against civilians taking part in peaceful demonstrations.

Addressing lawmakers, the minister said the actions taken against protesters since late December were unacceptable in every respect. The repression of the demonstrations that have been facing in Iran since Dec. 28 is "intolerable, unbearable, and inhumane," he said, as cited by reports.

He also stressed that accountability must follow such actions, warning that those responsible should not escape consequences. "There can be no impunity for those who turn their guns against peaceful protesters," he said.

Iran has experienced sustained unrest since the end of December, with demonstrations first erupting at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar amid severe currency depreciation and deepening economic hardship. The protests later expanded to numerous cities across the country.

While Iranian authorities have not released official casualty statistics, rights monitors cited in reports say hundreds of people have been killed, including both protesters and members of the security forces, and more than a thousand others have been injured. The same sources reported that thousands of individuals have been arrested during demonstrations held in hundreds of locations nationwide, spanning cities across all of Iran’s provinces.
