France requests NATO exercise in Greenland
Trump has long pursued Greenland, citing security concerns and the need to counter Russia and China, though both Denmark and Greenland’s autonomous government insist that the territory’s status is non-negotiable. The US leader’s rhetoric has escalated tensions with European NATO allies, who warn that any attempt to alter Greenland’s status could destabilize the alliance.
The French presidency stated, “France is requesting a NATO exercise in Greenland and is ready to participate in it.” The proposed maneuvers would involve US forces and serve as a demonstration of support for Denmark, signaling that the island’s sovereignty is taken seriously.
Last week, several European NATO countries opposing Trump’s ambitions, including France, Germany, and the UK, deployed small contingents to Greenland for reconnaissance ahead of Denmark’s independent ‘Arctic Endurance’ drills.
While symbolic of sovereignty, that exercise is not NATO-affiliated and does not include US participation. In retaliation, Trump threatened tariffs on nations resisting his Greenland plans, prompting warnings of countermeasures from European leaders.
Speaking to reporters at the World Economic Forum, Trump reiterated his objective, claiming there is “no going back” on his goal of acquiring Greenland. When asked how far he would be willing to go, he responded cryptically: “You’ll find out.”
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron condemned Trump’s rhetoric in his Davos address, describing the US as a “bully” and asserting that Europe will prioritize “rule of law over brutality.”
