France Agrees to Work with China to Ease Middle East Tensions
Barrot stated that the “Iranian regime bears responsibility for the ongoing escalation,” highlighting Tehran’s “unjustifiable attacks” in the region and its failure to comply with UN Security Council resolutions concerning its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. He also criticized Iran’s “refusal to engage in good faith in multilateral negotiations” and referenced “the scale of the human rights violations” during a crackdown on protests in January.
Addressing the recent military actions, Barrot noted that the US-Israeli operation “was conducted without France’s participation or information,” emphasizing that “it is each country’s responsibility to prioritize international institutions for resolving disputes and, if necessary, resorting to force.”
Both sides agreed on “the need to work towards de-escalation, in conjunction with the Gulf countries,” and to pursue “a political settlement guaranteeing collective security interests” under UN Security Council resolutions and international law.
The tensions escalated after the US and Israel carried out airstrikes on Iran on Saturday, reportedly killing the country’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and 786 others. Iran responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf nations hosting US-linked sites, resulting in multiple casualties, including six US service members killed and many others injured.
The attacks occurred amid ongoing indirect nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington, which have been mediated by Oman.
