France Rejects Petition to Withdraw Antisemitism Bill

(MENAFN) French lawmakers on Wednesday voted against holding a debate on a petition calling for the withdrawal of an antisemitism bill introduced by MP Caroline Yadan, despite the petition gathering more than 700,000 signatures.

The National Assembly’s law committee rejected the request by 30 votes to 21, effectively preventing a dedicated discussion on the petition titled “No to the Yadan law.”

The petition opposes Yadan’s proposal, which seeks to expand the legal definition of antisemitism and broaden the range of punishable offenses.

Supporters of the decision argued that a separate debate was unnecessary since the bill itself is already scheduled for discussion in the National Assembly on Thursday.

“It would be perfectly redundant to have a debate on a debate that is already going to take place,” said lawmaker Pierre Cazeneuve, according to a parliamentary broadcaster.

However, left-wing opposition lawmakers criticized the move, arguing that dismissing the petition ignored the concerns of a large number of citizens who signed it.

Members of La France Insoumise described the decision as “an insult” to petitioners and called for protests outside parliament on Thursday.

Mathilde Panot also condemned the vote, calling it a “scandal” in a post on US social media platform X, and said she would refer the matter to the President of the National Assembly in an effort to force a formal debate.
