French Fighter Jet Crashes During Training, Killing Pilot
The incident took place late Tuesday in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department, near Nancy, where the fighter jet had been operating from Nancy-Ochey air base.
The aircraft was carrying two crew members, a pilot and a navigator. While officials confirmed that the pilot had died, search teams continued efforts to locate the missing navigator.
The crash occurred at approximately 11:35 p.m. local time (2135 GMT) in an area north of Nancy, between the villages of Rogeville, Domevre-en-Haye and Tremblecourt.
Extensive emergency resources, including police officers and firefighters, were dispatched to the crash site, according to Henry Lemoine, mayor of nearby Pont-a-Mousson.
Authorities used a drone to locate wreckage from the aircraft. However, further information about the incident had not been released as rescue and emergency operations continued, Lemoine said in a social media statement.
A crisis coordination center was set up in Rogeville to manage the response, while local officials cautioned residents about potential traffic disruptions in nearby areas.
Meanwhile, judicial authorities launched an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash and identify its cause.
